Otis Julius: “Chasing Dreams” Music Video Review

Otis Julius has a lot of things going for him; a mullet, a chopper, and a dream– Chasing Dreams, his newest music video, lets you know exactly where he stands. You get a sense very early on that his music is more about his message than anything else.  The hook: “I’m running, I’m running, I’m chasing my dreams.” is repeated enough times, and with enough gusto, so that by the end, you’re sure this guy is gonna accomplish something. What that may be, we don’t know, but you have to admire Otis Julius’ bravado, if anything.

The video itself is well-shot, and fits with the music. There’s something about Otis’ style where you can tell he’s really not trying to impress anyone with heady lyrics or sick bass drops, it’s just him and his ideals that are being put on the table.

Some may dig that, and some may not. If super intense speaker-killing bass or high level rapping ability are the things you’re into, you’re not gonna get that here. And that’s okay, because that’s not what the music is about. On the other hand, some lines are undoubtedly cringey and the music is pretty repetitive. That’s not to say I didn’t get any enjoyment out of watching this video a few times, because it is hilarious and awesome.

As a standalone audio track, Chasing Dreams is pretty underwhelming. Yet there’s definitely something magical about watching him and his dopplegängers jam out in track suits at a trailer park. It’s in that weird in-between where the video makes me want to like the music, a lot more than I think I should.

Overall Rating: 3/5
